Food Safety

The following are general procedures and sanitary regulations for Melon producing farms:

FIELD PACKING

Health:

If there is a health problem an employee must go to the doctor for medical evaluation before attending work. No one is allowed to work if health conditions are not satisfactory.

All workers involved in the packing process are required to wash their hands with a quatermary ammonium compound to sterilize hands. Sanitary Facilities are provided in several different locations conveniently away from water sources to avoid any possibilities of contamination.

Pesticide Policy:

All pesticides used comply with EPA regulations and strictly meet pre-harvest interval applications so there is no residue risk. In addition, the policy includes the use of biological insecticides and natural products such as insect pheromones to diminish the use of hard, less traditional accepted products.

Pesticide residues are continuously analyzed to ensure the correct use of the accepted pesticide products.

Water:

Since all melon varieties are susceptible to bacteria and fungi it is essential that the water used for irrigation or fertilization purposes be clean and free of such contaminating agents. Water comes from clean rivers or wells, previous analysis showed no contamination present.

PLANT PACKING

Health:

All workers involved in the packing process are required to wash their hands with a quaternary ammonium compound to sterilize hands and their shoes are also required to be sterilized at the entrance by passing through a wet sponge impregnated with a sterilizing cleaning product.

Pest Control:

The whole packing plant is properly enclosed to keep it free from insects and bugs. Electronic insect repellant are located inside plant to control insects if any, and Rodent control is also place around the plant and is monitored daily.

Water:

Fruit is immersed in chlorinated water bathes, where chlorine is checked every hour to ensure that concentration is not less than 50-ppm active chlorine always. (Above 100-ppm total chlorine) (Records are available)
